The assessment course has now come to a close and I wanted to post my final reflection. I appreciated the course and overall found it to be very useful. One of the issues that I have is a graded number of reponses to others discussion. We are a huge AFL district and grading on behavior is a step backwards. I will tweak this reflection to other's postings for my classess and have students reflect/provide feedback for others intrinsically instead of grading on a behavior! Week 6--Where did you go??

I had a rough, rough week six. In fact, I didn't even know I missed it till it was over. Hopefully my final project will be a great way to make up for it!!

On Sunday our group wrapped up our midterm project. I began this week's assignments a little late but judging by the discussion board, so did others. The piece of this assignment I found challenging was that it appears as though Casey's ideas where not very well organized. It was difficult to sift through what he had all listed and as a student, I think I would be very challenged by that.

I liked the reference to blooms within course creation and assessment because I think it's essential for understanding to make sure to include all the levels of blooms in a class-whether it's online or not!

Group Assessment Mid-Term

The last two weeks have been very interesting in terms of our group project. The beginning of the project was a little sketchy as it took sometime for us to get organized about where we were going to do our collaboration. However, the project came together well. Each team member did their portion of the work and collaboratively we brought the project together well. I also appreciated that our group didn't feel "pressured" to race to get things done. Each person could do their work at their pace and contribute. That's one of my favorite parts of online education!!

Personally, my confusion lied around the learning objectives. I didn't feel like this section was as clear as it could have been. I may need to go back and do some additional reading on this.

Edublogs, for example, are a format that encourage collaborative learning and provoke higher order thinking skills. (Lee and Allen, 2006)

Blogs have a lot of potential in the world of online learning-specifically assessment. As most school districts continue to look for ways to incorporate 21st Century Skills, Blogging is an easy way for teachers to use technology to assist students in asynchronous self reflection. Blogging also allows for students to participate collaboratively in each other's learning. Students and teachers are able to post comments and reflections in response to other students learning. It is also a great way for students to assess where they are located in relation to their classmates.

Disadvantages of blogs--

When compared to other Web 2.0 technologies such as wikispaces, blogs are limited in the sense that they operate with one person leading the conversation or reflection and then students/teachers commenting. This one way form of communication can be limiting if students don't ask other students for comments. Another disadvantage of bloggin can be time. A teacher must decide which tools will benefit their students the most and then integrate those. It can be difficult for teachers/students to remember to update and reflect/respond to others blogs.

Reflections

I have always loved the idea of using a blog in a way to not only self-reflect but to have others openly be able to comment on your reflections. The biggest issue I see with a blog is that it is one more thing for you to have to remember to update and check. When time is an issue one must decide which pieces of technology they are going to use and keep up. We just can't do everything!

Partner Interview

Brenda lives in Cedar Grove, WI, and is currently working as the Technology Coordinator for the Kettle Moraine School District in Wales, WI. She has one amazing child, Sullivan who is a 2.5 year old boy and certainly is on the go often, and is also expecting her second, due May 24th.

She also teaches for UW-Whitewater in their Business and Marketing Education program.

She is working on her PhD so her interest in Online education lies in her dissertation work. She is writing on perceptions of online education. She also recently worked on a feasibility study with the KM district and will be working with the Superintendent and HS principal to implement an online program for the fall. Where they are going to use the UW-Stout courses for their staff's professional development so she is working her way through them as well.

It is my pleasure to introduce Katrina Steiner.

Katrina currently teaches HS online through a company called Nexus. She have been teaching online for 5 years now. She is married for almost two years now and will be hopefully moved into her house by April. She lives in Algoma, WI and hopes to have some children in the near future.

She started the Stout program because she was looking for license renewal courses and thought it would be a great addition to her skills to add the online teacher certficate.
